Indesiderium - The Nocturnal Seance of Lucifer
6.5/10 - Satanath Records
Indesiderium hail from California, but you would never guess it from their musical style. What they deal in is fast-paced and melodic black metal following the conventions of the second wave.
The band, formed in 2012, delivers a competent but unsurprising and rather flat third album with The Nocturnal Seance of Lucifer. The melodies move at a brisk pace, building around a certain atmosphere of darkness.
It probably goes without saying, but some of the riffs are good, while others are decidedly mediocre. The band has tried to forge these ingredients into good songs, but you can’t turn bronze into gold no matter how hard you hammer it.
The Nocturnal Seance of Lucifer is therefore more of a C-grade effort: easy enough to listen to, but never particularly exciting or inspiring enough to make you want to praise the album. Part of the blame lies with the production, which sounds overly demo-like by today’s standards. The production isn’t exactly bad, but there is little reason to praise it either.
The shrieked vocals are suitably tense and perfectly decent within the genre. The problem is that there are ten bands like this for every dozen, so anyone looking for a distinctive personality is likely to come away disappointed.
Indesiderium has released an album that is effortless to listen to — and just as effortless to forget. The result would be fairly typical for a band’s first album, but by the third record, you would hope for a higher level of quality. At least, with a running time of only half an hour, the album doesn’t have time to become overly tedious.
